Confirm Eligibility

Study staff will confirm your eligibility through a brief health review and screening tests, including measuring your current temperature to confirm fever at or above 100.4°F.

Temperature Data Collection

Once eligibility is confirmed, study staff will measure your temperature using multiple sensors including oral thermometer, ear thermometer, forehead sensor, and a thermal camera.

Complete Your Visit

After data collection is complete (20-45 minutes total), you can receive up to a total of $550 for all study activities.

Who is this study for?

You may be eligible if you meet the following requirements:
Gender: All genders
Age: 5 years and older
Fever: 100.4°F or above
Can follow study instructions
Willing to have temperature measured and photos taken
Have tattoos, large birthmarks, scars, or major skin discoloration on forehead
Strong preference for patients who are not currently taking Tylenol or other fever reduction medications or whose fevers remain above 100.4°F (38.1°C) while medicated.
Additional eligibility criteria will be reviewed during the screening process

What is this study about?

This study collects data to test temperature sensor technologies for developing and improving healthcare devices, features, and services. Researchers measure body temperature using multiple reference devices and a prototype sensor.

How much time does participation require?

One local clinic visit lasting 20-45 minutes total.

What is the compensation?

Total: Up to $550 via Gift Card for those with verified fever at time of visit

Participants complete at least one trial but may participate in up to three trials. Payment is provided at the end of your visit.

Is participation voluntary?

Yes, participation is completely voluntary. You may decline to participate or stop at any time without penalty. Parents/guardians consenting for children should know the child may also choose to stop participation at any time.

What happens at the clinic visit?

  1. Consent process: A member of the study team will explain all study procedures to you and answer any questions you have. You will be given a copy of the informed consent form and provided with time to read it. If you choose to enroll, you may sign the informed consent form.
  2. Eligibility screening: A study team member will review your eligibility by collecting baseline information such as your medical history and current temperature . Your temperature will be measured to confirm you currently have a fever at or above 100.4°F.
  3. Forehead preparation: If you have any cosmetics or sunscreen on your forehead, the study team may cleanse, or ask you to cleanse, your forehead with your permission. Small adhesive markers will be applied to your forehead to help with data collection.
  4. Temperature measurements: Multiple methods will be used to measure your temperature. This includes an oral thermometer placed under your tongue, a thermometer on your forehead, a thermometer in your ear, and a thermal infrared camera. All measurements are non-invasive.
  5. Optional ear data collection: If you are 13 years of age or older, you may be eligible to participate in optional ear temperature data collection. This involves having your ear canal visually measured by an ear scope and w

How is my information kept private?

Your contact information is kept separate from study data and secured by the study team. Your study data is assigned a code so it cannot easily identify you. Only authorized study personnel access your identifiable information.

Contact information associated with this study will be deleted within one year after study ends. Coded study data deleted within 10 years after study ends.

Study results may be published but won't include identifying information.
