Participants will be randomly placed into one of two groups: either the Nook AI therapy platform or standard remote CBT with a qualified therapist. Participants will complete questionnaires about symptoms and wellbeing at the start, at weeks 3, 6 and 9, and for the last time at week 13. Each set takes about 25 minutes.
Receive up to £97 for completing all study questionnaires.
The treatment phase lasts approximately 9 weeks, with a follow-up assessment at 3 months. Total study participation is around 4 months from signing up to the final questionnaire.
This study is fully remote. All appointments, therapy sessions and assessments are completed from home using your own phone, tablet or computer.

A clinical trial is a research study that helps develop and test new medical treatments, devices, or tests to determine if they are safe and effective. This study is comparing an AI therapy platform supervised by qualified clinicians with standard CBT for treating depression and anxiety. Your participation helps us find out whether digital therapy works as well as traditional talking therapy.
PsyScale Ltd is the sponsor and funder of this research. PsyScale has developed an AI-powered digital therapy platform called Nook that delivers proven therapy techniques including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). The platform aims to provide therapy that is available when you need it, without long waits.
Lindus Health is a contract research organization that manages clinical trials. The team coordinates study recruitment, virtual operations, and data collection.
Nook is a new AI-powered digital therapy platform you access through an app or web browser. It delivers Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) based techniques through text-based chat and guided exercises. The programme covers values and behavioural activation, cognitive defusion, sleep regulation and graded exposure to mental health triggers to help with symptoms of anxiety and depression. Nook is clinician-supervised, meaning healthcare professionals will be monitoring your progress in the app during treatment . Sessions take about 20-25 minutes, with most people completing the programme in 7-8 weeks.
What makes it different: Qualified healthcare professionals actively monitor your progress throughout treatment. The AI adapts its communication style to you whilst delivering standardised, evidence-based therapy content. This combines the accessibility of digital technology with the clinical oversight of traditional therapy.
This study combines CBT and ACT - two evidence based approaches recommended by the NHS.
CBT helps you manage problems by changing how you think and behave. It focuses on the connection between your thoughts, feelings and actions, teaching practical techniques to break negative patterns. CBT is recommended by the NHS for treating anxiety and depression.
ACT teaches psychological flexibility – accepting difficult thoughts and feelings whilst taking values-based action. It includes techniques like cognitive defusion and behavioural activation.
Combining these approaches can be particularly effective, even if you've tried CBT alone before.
Participants randomised to the traditional therapy group receive CBT delivered remotely by qualified therapists via video sessions. This represents the current standard of care for digital mental health treatment.
Your therapist will work with you to identify unhelpful thought patterns and behaviours, develop coping strategies and work towards your personal goals.
Nook is a clinician-supervised, AI enabled digital mental health tool. The therapy content and exercises in the Nook platform are standardised, so they don't change. What the AI personalises is how it talks to you, the questions it asks to help you reflect, and how it introduces and reminds you about exercises. The AI doesn't learn from conversations or change its therapy approach, clinical decisions, or safety features while you're using it.
Yes, at any time without penalty or effect on your medical care. You can request your samples be destroyed at any time during the study.
